The Mediterranean region is facing increasing pressure on its coastal zones. Since 1975, rapid coastal urbanization has led to a 109% increase in land take, putting coastal ecosystems, landscapes and the resilience of territories to climate change at risk.
In this context, PAP/RAC is currently organizing a training course in Rabat, Morocco, focused on capacity building on IMAP Common Indicator 25, recently adopted and addressing land cover change. The training is organized at the request of the Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development and is intended for national experts from the Ministry involved in monitoring this indicator.
The Integrated Monitoring and Assessment Programme (IMAP) provides the common framework adopted by the 21 Mediterranean countries to harmonize the monitoring and assessment of the state of the marine and coastal environment. Through a set of common indicators, IMAP enables the assessment of water quality, biodiversity, pollution, habitat degradation and pressures related to human activities.
Common Indicator 25 contributes directly to IMAP Ecological Objective 8, which focuses on the terrestrial component of coastal zones that are particularly vulnerable to flooding and sea-level rise. This activity is part of MedProgramme Sub-project 2.1, funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and implemented by UNEP/MAP, and aims to strengthen the harmonized implementation of ICZM across the Mediterranean.
